Arne Duncan, Obama’s current Secretary of Education, will soon be looking for other employment, just as so many Obama confidantes and appointments will be searching out new positions as Obama’s term ends in two years.
Duncan was a Harvard basketball player, years ago, and is one of the privileged ones consistently invited to play pick-up games on the tarmac with Obama and his aide (and Duke grad) Reggie Love. But Duncan has also been active in pushing for reform of college athletics, which immediately makes him more qualified than Dave Brandon, who has wasted his political capital on matters mercantile, rather than using his AD position as a bully pulpit for reform. And probably allows Duncan to immediately be a stronger force for reform of college athletics than the current smarmy NCAA president, Mark Emmert.
The choice of Duncan is slightly ‘outside the box’, but Schlissel will not only find a capable, high-profile thinker in Duncan, but will improve Michigan by moving ahead of the midwestern, profit-toting paradigm which proved so toxic, finally, at Michigan.
