John Skipper, ESPN President since January 2012 (according to Wikipedia) revealed at today’s MIT Sloan School Sports Conference Seminar entitled “Media Rights: Pricing Power and Competition” that Watch ESPN will be soon be available to stream via personal Facebook walls, as a first-of-its’ kind sports programming.
The effort is without precedence in the 800 million-subscriber Facebook world, and is probably a harbinger of the increasing confluence of sport-programming with the world’s largest social-media platform — though the “roll-out” appears to be “soft”, much as ESPN attempted a low-key, gradual roll-out of its’ women’s network over the last 36 months.
. Though Facebook has struggled with moving its’ platform from pure social-exchange to -social-exchange-laced-with-advertising, the looming Facebook IPO might be expected to give Facebook the assets and drive to move more forcefully and quickly into sports-programming offerings. But not without tension.
In fact, Skipper is reported to have said at the conference that “We regard all social networks as competition,” and still work with them. We want to be part of the experience, but not replaced.
